World AIDS Day Affects Us All

December 1 is World AIDS Day, an event across the continents that acknowledges the impact HIV disease and AIDS have had on our world. Worldwide, women represent 50% of those living with HIV, and young women in particular are a growing concern. But being a little older than ”young” doesn’t mean we’re not at risk of being touched by HIV. We’re at risk for sexually transmitted infections as along as we’re sexual. It’s as simple as that. Making sure you’re getting your Pap smears and other tests you and your doctor deem necessary are important in maintaining your sexual health.

Today I light a candle for the women I’ve known with HIV here in Canada and the women far and away. HIV is a devastating disease with no cure, yet it has many ramifications: social stigma, discrimination, violence, loss of community, loss of health, loss of hope. Despite the advances in treatment, HIV continues to have an impact on peoples’ lives in a multitude of ways. For some insights into the lives of women with HIV in Canada, Positive Women’s Network posts stories.

We are all affected by HIV and we all have choices. This World AIDS day, let’s talk about sexual health and sexual decision making rights for all. Let’s remember that gender discrimination plays a part in who gets any STI. Let’s work to change that.
