Happy New Year!

Bed

I’ll admit my chocolate eating holiday didn’t go as planned. We all dropped like zombie dominoes to a nasty cold virus and it ain’t over yet, so this week’s post is just a launch to more interesting reads: Loved this “Best of re:Cycling Blog” list  from the The Society for Menstrual Cycle research.  DO read [...]

Your Sexuality: Great Info from Gunter

Magnifying glass

I’ve found a new (to me) source for my sexual-health-info-seeking: Dr. Jen Gunter. You already know this if you follow her: she’s factual and funny. She’s an OB/GYN with a passion for health and social media. And she’s Canadian-born (shout-out to Winnipeg)!  I like to read her stuff because she is sex positive, and can [...]

“Hello Down There”- You’re Beautiful

nectarines

The stat was shocking, but the info that followed inspired. In a group surveyed, 89% of women don’t like the look of their genitals, and more than half think their genitals are an improper size. What does this type of self-despair mean in the bedroom?

Sex Education or Silence?

Have I ever mentioned the old Herman cartoon where a woman is at her doctor’s office? She says, “They had much nicer diseases when I was a girl.” Yeah, right. STIs are old news, except for HIV (although it’s been around longer than you might think). So talking about them is good IMO.

Have You Met Women-Centred CEMCOR?

Last week when cruising for tidbits to send out via our Twitter feed, I was impressed all over again by CEMCOR, The Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research.  I think it’s great how they buck trends in their research on the entire reproductive life span of women.

Roller Coaster Emotions or Lapsing Libido? A Tough Choice

“That thing you call people with” is a popular phrase at my place because my perimenopausal brain has its lapses- I feel like I’m pregnant again. If you’re in the throes of perimenopause yourself, hormonal symptoms could be your new norm: hot flashes, the sudden mood changes, sleep interruptions, and of course, the memory loss. If anxiety and its partner depression are among your changes, don’t be surprised. They too go with the territory.

Between the Sheets: Sex Ed. Books for Grown Ups

I read my first adult sex book at the age of twelve, poring over my mom’s copy of Dr. David Reuben’s Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask. At that time, I thought it was the only sex book out there beyond the squirm-inducing pink and blue booklets [...]

Looking Backwards Periodically

I remember my first period, but like most women, I won’t know my last period at the time. When I reach a calendar year without a period, menopause will be official, but it will be an over-the-shoulder realization, rather than the facing-the-future realization of the first. Most women will go through years of perimenopause leading up to that unknown finale.

Youshouldknow.ca: sexual health news, views and science for women in perimenopause and beyond. Find info on preventing sexually transmitted infections, aging considerations, and relationship dynamics. Supportive information for all of us as we move into our middle years with partners new and old.
