Relationships that Count

Puzzle piece

I had the best afternoon last week. I was in a room full of soon-to-be doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists and counselors to talk about sexual health, specifically HIV, and what’s so different for women. Patients, clients, whatever they’re going to call them- it’s the relationships that count.

Blasting “The Beauty” in Bossypants

tina_fey

Just finished reading Tina Fey’s Bossypants so I could write this blog about middle age and satisfaction. (Nice rationalization, eh?) Well, I’ll confess that’s not why I started it, but with that fringe benefit, I’m grinning.

30 Years of AIDS and Ignorance Reigns

Fight AIDS

Serious title of a serious post, yes. But today’s a big day: it’s the 30th anniversary of the first identified cases of what would eventually be called AIDS. The cases puzzled the doctors- seemingly healthy young men suddenly developing pneumonia and dying. What was going on? More cases appeared, and in 1984, the human immunodeficiency [...]

Sex Education or Silence?

Have I ever mentioned the old Herman cartoon where a woman is at her doctor’s office? She says, “They had much nicer diseases when I was a girl.” Yeah, right. STIs are old news, except for HIV (although it’s been around longer than you might think). So talking about them is good IMO.

(Unwelcome) Hotness: Humility at Work

Love these days of perimenopause when I need a third breakfast now, or can’t remember what was I doing before a coworker asked me a question. Thankfully I work with women who can relate to hormones. Some are years away from anticipating this rollercoaster, others are past it, but at least they can laugh. And [...]

Is Doctor-Patient Communication an Issue for You?

Interesting update from Dr Brian Goldman last week over at White Coat Black Art (great show by the way) about aging doctors. A WCBA broadcast last month explored an increasingly common issue: the aging MD. The premise was to examine whether older MDs are able to provide care that meets the patient satisfaction, and up [...]

Sexual Politics and Padded Bras

It was a week. Miriam pointed me towards the piece on school aged sexual politics (Slut Shaming on the Playground), then I got the one about women being fired from their jobs because they didn’t fit into managements new uniforms… available only in sizes 2 or 4. Add to that the uproar about undeveloped girls being [...]

Valentine’s Day- Bonus or Bust?

Seeing as Monday is my post day and today is February 14, it’s kind of difficult to ignore Valentine’s Day. It’s a pressure-inducing day for couples and singles alike. And encouraging it among children is ridiculous.
